China Mobile to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan partners

   Date:2011/10/27

China Mobile will continue to strengthen its cooperation with Taiwan-based makers for the development of TD-LTE products from chipset solutions to end market devices. MediaTek, HTC and Foxconn Electronics are currently serving as important partners for China Mobile, according to company chairman, Wang Jianzhou.

China Mobile is currently displaying an array of TD-LTE products manufactured by Taiwan makers at the ongoing 2011 ITU trade fair. The exhibits include TD-LTE handsets powered by MediaTek solutions, customized smartphones from HTC, mobile routers from Quanta Computer and tablet PCs from Acer, Wang noted.

Foxconn has been a major handset ODM for China Mobile, Wang added.

China Mobile currently has a total of 630 million mobile subscribers and the number is increasing at a rate of 60 million a year. This indicates the vast demand for handsets by China Mobile. Additionally, China Mobile's procurement of TD-SCDMA handsets will also increase substantially in the next 1-2 years, according to industry sources.

Viewing its vast subscriber base, China Mobile has discussed with other telecom operators and equipment suppliers about the possibility of developing its own open-end operating system for handsets, said Wang, but added that the project is still under discussion.
