Sony eyes China

   Date:2006/12/31
China is on target to become Sony's second-largest market in 10 years, outpacing Japan, top company officials said.

"China is already our fastest growing geographic region," said Howard Stringer, chief executive and head of the board of directors at Sony Corp said in comments at a Beijing press conference to mark the company's 60th anniversary. Stringer said China will become more like the United States, Sony's top market, where the company is perceived as an integrated firm doing both entertainment and consumer electronics.

"At the moment, Sony's image to Chinese consumers is rather fragmented and we are working to pull it together," he said.

The world's second-largest consumer-electronics maker predicts its sales in China should reach US$8 billion by 2008. China's consumer electronics market may double to 1.02 trillion Yuan (US$126 billion) by 2010, up from 589 billion Yuan last year and 464 billion Yuan in 2003 with a compound annual growth that will reach 12 percent, according to a McKinsey & Co forecast last month. That will account for a quarter of the world's total.
