Acer will not give up netbook market, says VP

   Date:2011/11/29

Commenting on the recent rumors that Korea-based Samsung Electronics will stop producing 10.1-inch netbooks in the first quarter of 2012, leaving the netbook market to the top-2 players Acer and Asustek, Acer vice president Scott Lin pointed out that Acer will not give up the netbook market.

Lin pointed out that several emerging markets such as China, India and Indonesia still have strong demand for netbooks and the company will continue to target these markets as their focus for netbooks.

Although netbooks only contribute limited profits, since emerging markets that wish to strengthen their IT education will normally place large amount of orders, the strong volume could still help boosting the overall sales of the product line, Lin noted.

Commenting on the China market, Lin, who will take over the management position of Acer China, noted that Acer has already become the second-largest PC brand in China and if the company continues to expand its netbook business in the region, Acer should be able to extend its gap with Dell again since Dell is not putting as much focus on netbook as before.

Acer is currently the largest netbook player worldwide with sales surpassed 1.7 million units in the third quarter, accounting for 22% of the market, while Asustek had sales of more than 1.2 million units, accounting for 16% and Samsung with 840,000 units and more than 10%.
