China's hotel industry needs about 100,000 professional and managerial personnel to fill a staff shortage.
China had more than 9,000 hotels, but lacked senior personnel for star hotels. Five star hotels need experienced professionals, but a high salary is not enough to attract them.
It's common to offer a yearly salary of 100,000 yuan (12,500 U.S. dollars) and still have difficulties finding a qualified chef for a five-star hotel in Shanghai. Professional education for the hotel trade lagged behind the fast development of China's hotel industry.
China's vocational education, described as "the low-end education", mainly trained the students for simple posts like waiters and waitresses, but lacked proper training for managers. On the other hand, university education, "the high-end education", could not provide enough practical courses for hotel majors.
