BASF to Buy Motorcycle Business in China

   Date:2006/12/31

German-based chemical maker BASF AG said it is buying Guilin REEcat Catalyst Co. Ltd. of China, a maker of motorcycle emissions-control catalysts.

The value of the deal was not disclosed. Ludwigshafen-based BASF said the transaction should be completed by the end of next year's second quarter.

REEcat, founded in 1991 and based in Guilin, will be acquired by BASF Catalysts LLC, a subsidiary formed after BASF bought U.S. rival Engelhard Corp. last year.

"This is an exciting step forward for BASF Catalysts," Wayne T. Smith, the president of the division, said in a statement. "As a world leader in catalysts, we believe it's important that we continue to expand our strong technology presence throughout the world, particularly in the fast-growing China market."

BASF described REEcat as a "pioneer developer of mobile emission-control technologies in China." The Chinese company makes and sells catalysts and systems for motorcycles and small engines. It has a manufacturing plant and a research and development center in Guilin, as well as sales offices in Guangdong and Chongqing.
