South Korea-based LG Electronics recently announced new 47- and 55-inch TVs for launch in first-half 2012. LG will also introduce high-end edge-lit 3D smart TV products to the Taiwan market in second-quarter 2012. LG in Taiwan predicts the price of 3D TVs will fall further, close to the price of LED TVs.

Samsung Electronics will focus on the sales of direct-lit LED TVs. Sizes will range from 26-65 inch.

Industry sources noted that the price difference between Samsung's LED backlight modules and CCFL backlight modules has been narrowing. After March, the price of direct-lit LED TVs should be the same as CCFL-backlit products. Hence, the industry expects LED backlight penetration to increase. Currently, shipments of LED-backlit products account for 50%, in second-half 2012, the figure should increase above 60%.
