Skyworth net more than triples

Skyworth Digital Holdings Ltd, which makes televisions for customers including LG Electronics Inc and Mitsubishi Electric Corp, said six-month profit more than tripled on rising sales in China.

Net income in the six months ended on September 30 climbed to HK$28 million (US$3.6 million), or 1.22 Hong Kong cents a share, compared with a restated HK$9 million, or 0.39 HK cents, a year earlier, Skyworth said in a statement on Wednesday. Sales rose 21 percent to HK$5.6 billion.

Skyworth is seeking to tap growing demand for electronic goods in China, the world's fastest-growing major economy. The nation's retail sales climbed 14 percent in November from a year earlier as rising incomes spurred consumer spending.

The company's sales in China grew 21 percent to HK$4.85 billion, or 86 percent of its total turnover. Apart from contract manufacturing sales to customers including LG and Mitsubishi, Skyworth also sells TVs under its own brand.

Skyworth, whose main product is traditional cathode-ray tube televisions, lost market share in China this year to companies such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co and Japan's Toshiba Corp, which focus on sales of liquid-crystal display models.
