Dow plans to build two new epoxy units

DOW Chemical Co said that its epoxy unit will build two plants in Shanghai to increase its ability in local supply.

The United States-based company said it has selected the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park as the site for its 150,000-ton-a-year glycerine-to-epichlorohydrin plant (GTE) and a 100,000-ton-a-year liquid epoxy resins plant. Both are slated to start up in the 2009-2010 period.

The GTE facility will use patented technology to convert bio-diesel derived glycerine into epichlorohydrin. Epoxy products are used in a wide range of applications, including coatings for marine, automotive and packaging products as well as in electrical laminates, adhesives and civil engineering.

Dow announced in August it will invest more than US$200 million in China's epoxy market over the next five years to double its share to 30 percent for the primary component here.

The announcement follows the signing of a letter of intent by Dow with Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Co and its subsidiary, Shanghai Tianyuan Group Huasheng Chemical Co, for the supply of the critical raw materials for both new facilities.

"The new plants will provide the in-market capabilities required to accelerate our growth and the growth of our customers," Dow said in a statement.
