Camera module has sensitive IR detector

   Date:2007/04/20

NEC Corp. has developed an IR camera module that enables the detection and image capturing of objects even under near-zero visibility conditions. The uncooled HX0830M1 module delivers a highly sensitive IR detector capable of detecting far IR energy from 8µm to 14µm. Embedded with image processing circuits, it is highly suited to heat surveillance and vision enhancement applications.

The HX0830M1 module measures 38-by-38-by-65mm and uses an uncooled IR detector, the HX0830, with a 23.5µm pixel pitch. The module offers a 320 x 240pixel image resolution, under 0.075 (K), temperature resolution and clear imaging.

In addition to a NTSC/PAL analog video output, digital video output is also provided. Digital raw data output is possible for each pixel in real time. Module control is conducted via RS-232C, and features such as logo input, color pallet configuration and graphic overlay can be easily customized with the user interface tools.

Since the module can be operated through a simple connection to a power supply and has a video output terminal and a simple button interface, it can be commercialized or embedded in IR cameras without any kind of special development, making it suitable for a variety of applications, said NEC. For example, as the IR sensor is unaffected by visible light and can detect objects as heat information even in places where there is no light, it could be used for intruder surveillance, security, disaster relief, survivor searches and vision enhancement for aircraft, ships and vehicles, said the company.

In addition, because it is possible to visualize an object's surface temperature via two-dimensional distribution, remotely and without making contact, it can be used for condition monitoring and maintenance of dangerous areas such as places with objects of high temperature, rotators, high voltages and in locations that require acquisition of temperature distribution information. Because it can assess the heat conduction state, the module can be used for quality control of products and foods, for which heat processing and drying are performed, and in R&D and medical fields for applications such as non-destructive inspections of products and building structures.

NEC is planning to commercialize an uncooled IR camera module with a 640 x 480pixel resolution in the future. Standalone uncooled IR detectors, which are used in the modules, are also available. Delivery is three months after receipt of order.
