QINGDAO Haier Co Ltd, the Shanghai-listed unit of China's biggest home appliance maker, said first-quarter profit rose 1.43 percent.

Net income climbed to 122.1 million yuan (US$16 million), the Qingdao, Shandong Province-based company said in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange yesterday. Sales jumped 46 percent to 6.2 billion yuan.

First-quarter expenses increased 37.7 percent year on year, led by rising prices of copper and aluminum this year.

The company also reported a 31.3 percent rise in 2006 profit to 313.9 million yuan. Sales rose 18.9 percent to 19.62 billion yuan for the entire year, it said.
