AKZO Nobel NV is to spend 250 million euros (US$339 million) on building two chemicals plants in China - the first confirmed investments in a new multi-site being established by the company in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.

The two facilities will manufacture ethylene amines, used as intermediates in industrial applications like agriculture and textiles; and chelating agents, used in applications to help enhance daily human and animal well-being, such as micronutrients and food and beverage preservatives.

Work will begin once the relevant approval has been obtained from Chinese authorities. The chelating agents plant is expected to start up in 2009, followed by the ethylene amines factory in early 2010, the Dutch chemical group, also the world's largest coatings company, said in a statement.

The company announced in October it had reserved a 50 hectare plot in the Ningbo Chemical Industry Zone.
