Adata sales continue to slide in May; optimistic about USB 3.0 devices and SSD

Adata Technology has posted a sequential revenue decrease for the second straight month in May 2011. Nonetheless, the memory module maker expressed optimism that USB 3.0 storage devices and solid-state drives (SSD) will create new demand for the latter half of the year.

Adata reported NT$2.35 billion (US$82 million) in revenues for May 2011, down 7.4% sequentially. Revenues from January through May totaled NT$12.88 billion, down from the NT$18.69 billion registered in the same period last year.

Adata said that NAND flash prices have come under downward pressure recently due to chip suppliers' output growth through conversions to newer technology nodes. DRAM prices, however, have been relatively stable, Adata added.

Looking forward, Adata expects emerging demand for USB 3.0-related products and SSDs utilizing the high-performance SATA3 interface will buoy its sales performance in the second half of 2011.

Adata reiterated that memory market conditions would be more favorable in the third quarter, and prices for both NAND flash and DRAM chips are set to be much steadier than in 2010. Meanwhile, module makers are also expected to reach sustainable profitability through diversification, Adata indicated.
