The penetration rate of smartphones in the Taiwan handset market is expected reach 34% in 2011 compared to 17% in 2010. Sales of handsets in Taiwan total about seven million units a year, according to industry sources.
With the number of smartphone models launched by vendors to continue growing and ASPs likely to go down below NT$7,000 (US$231) in the near term, the smartphone penetration rate in the local market is expected to reach 60-70% in 2012, indicated the sources.
Android-based smartphones account for 70-80% of all smartphone models used currently in the Taiwan market, with HTC, Samsung Electronics and Sony Ericsson the top-three Android phone vendors, said the sources.
