Macronix International has reported higher than expected revenues for the fourth quarter of 2011, thanks to strong shipments of ROM products for handheld games consoles.

Macronix reportedly supplies ROM chips for Nintendo's 3DS and Wii systems, which enjoyed brisk sales in the fourth quarter.

Macronix collected NT$2.09 billion (US$69.1 million) in December revenues. Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2011 amounted to NT$8.41 billion, up 28% sequentially and beating the company's guidance of NT$8.1-8.3 billion.

The guidance range had been revised from Macronix' originally-targeted NT$7.8-8 billion, according to the company. Actual results for the fourth quarter are also the highest quarterly level for the company in 2011, Macronix said.

Macronix's revenues for all of 2011 totaled NT$27.84 billion, up 1% from the NT$27.56 billion registered in 2010.

Macronix is scheduled to detail its financial results for the last quarter of 2011, and outlook for first-quarter 2012, on February 9.
