Cal-Comp to enjoy strong external hard drive shipments in 2012; Min Aik announces 4Q11 result

   Date:2012-01-12

Taiwan-based Cal-Comp Electronics expects its external hard drive shipments in 2012 to double from those in 2011 with global market share to reach 50%.

In addition to external hard drive OEM business, Cal-Comp is also a hard drive printed circuit board supplier. With the company's production sites located in countries such as China, Malaysia, Brazil and Mexico, Cal-Comp's total external hard drive shipments in 2011 reached 18 million units.

Recovering from the floods in Thailand, Cal-Comp expects its hard drive component supplies will return to normal in February, while Seagate's acquisition of Samsung's hard drive department is also expected to bring Cal-Comp extra orders, helping the company's external hard drive shipments to reach 46 million units in 2012.

In additional news, Taiwan-based hard drive component maker Min Aik has announced revenues of NT$1.55 billion (US$51.79 million) for the fourth quarter of 2011, down 52.59% on quarter mainly due to its two plants in Thailand both being shut down during the quarter because of flooding.

Currently, Min Aik plans to shift its production of actuator pivot flex-circuit assemblies (APFA) to plants in Malaysia, but because the new production lines will require three months to finish, the company is only estimated to fully recover its capacity by the end of the first quarter.
