BEIJING Hyundai's bestselling sedan, 2008 Elantra, is a subject of safety recall due to its airbag defects.
In a report to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine last week, the joint venture between China's homegrown automaker BAIC Motor and its South Korean partner Hyundai Motor said it has initiated a safety recall involving 97,452 Elantra cars made between March 16, 2008, and January 25, 2010.
The recall will start from July 10 to upgrade the faulty airbag control unit, which can trigger the airbag by mistake when the car is parked or running at slow speed.
The consumer quality watchdog said it has received a number of complaints about the unexpected airbag self-explosion that caused some injuries and will keep an eye on the recall progress to ensure all safety threats are eliminated.
