The Central News Agency (Taipei) - Nearly all the respondents to a recent survey expressed great interest in hybrid vehicles, according to the poll results released Wednesday.

The survey, conducted by local polling company 104survey, found that 97 percent of the respondents said they were interested in finding out more about hybrid motors, while 93 percent also expressed willingness to buy one in the future.

Over 85 percent of the respondents were aware that hybrid cars can save fuel, while nearly 90 percent considered hybrid cars environmentally friendly.

Among those who want to buy a hybrid car in the future, fuel-saving (93 percent) and eco-friendliness (67 percent) are the main reasons behind their intentions, the survey shows.

Hotai Motor Co., the Taiwanese sales agent for Japan's Toyota Motors and Taiwan's top car vendor, said that more and more people are accepting the concept of hybrids, which is evident in the increasing sales figures.

During the first six months of 2012, Hotai sold over 8,000 hybrid vehicles in Taiwan compared to its sales of 55,000 conventional vehicles, the company said, adding that "supply is unable to meet demand."

Toyota, the world's No. 1 automaker, is also the most popular make in Taiwan among consumers interested in hybrid cars, with the Prius, Camry Hybrid and Prius C making up the top three favored choices.

The survey, conducted June 21-26, received 1,060 valid responses and had a margin error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
