Abstract
The local auto industry continues to grow in size, with local newspaper La Nouvelle Tribune reporting in mid-May 2014 that Morocco's auto industry had now surpassed both Egypt and Tunisia. According to foreign trade figures, Morocco accounted for 0.23% of the global automotive market in 2012. Encouragingly, Morocco saw growth at a time when many of its rival African and European countries saw their market shares fall. The country's main export destinations continue to be France and Spain. Within Africa, Egypt is the largest importer of Moroccan-made vehicles, importing some MAD764mn worth of automotive products in 2012. Low-cost Dacia models account for most Moroccan automotive exports.
Against this backdrop of rising demand for Moroccan vehicles, BMI accordingly sees local production rising considerably over our five-year forecast period, with a total completely built unit production of 155,920 in 2018. Our forecast for 2014 calls for 124,480 vehicles to be produced over the year, marking a 5.4% increase on 2013. The main auto producer in Morocco is Renault, which produced more than 100,000 vehicles in 2013, according to a February 2014 report in Le Figaro. The main cars produced in Morocco are the Dacia Lodgy, Dokker and Sandero models. Of this production, over 90% is then exported. France is the main destination for Renault's Moroccan-produced cars, followed by Turkey and Germany. From April 2014, Renault was due to start exports to Panama.
