Canadian battery manufacturer Electrovaya announced acquisition of Evonik Litarion GmbH together with licensing SEPARION intellectual property “a unique ceramic composite separator” from Evonik.
Electrovaya revealed a desire to take over lithium-ion electrodes and ceramic composite separators manufacturing facility “at a fraction of the tangible asset value“ half-year ago.
Now, Electrovaya will be able to produce 0.5 GWh of electrodes and 10 million m2 of ceramic separators annually for its own cells or other battery makers.
Formerly, Evonik supplied electrodes and separators to Li-Tec cell manufacturer (JV with Daimler), but Daimler soon will close Li-Tec and switch to LG Chem. Electrovaya must now figure out how to make this business profitable, without base customer Daimler.
