According to the China Internet Network Information Center, China has the world's biggest population of internet users with more than 500 million. Based on the rise of the nation's middle class, analysts believe that China's internet market still has room to grow. In fact a recent study from the consultancy, McKinsey & Co estimated that 6 million people go online for the first time in the country every month, and predicted the Chinese internet population will grow to 750 million in 2015.

Two prominent growth drivers in China's internet sector are online gaming, and mobile internet. According to a DCCI report issued this summer, China's mobile internet users will surpass the number of PC users as soon as 2013. Already, China has more mobile phone users than PC users.

Meanwhile Revenues generated for online games in China were up in the second quarter of 2011, according to recently-published figures from China's Analysis International. Total reported revenue for the quarter was CNY8.76 billion ($1.35 billion), representing a 12.6 percent growth from revenues reported for the same quarter last year, and is 3.1 percent more than those reported the prior quarter.

Earlier this month China's top search engine Baidu moved to strengthen its position in the mobile Internet era by launching a new mobile application system on Friday and competing with Internet rivals to provide more mobile services. Baidu plans to cooperate with cell phone makers and produce tailored products with the platform, which will add the company's cloud-computing services to handsets.

At Sohu.com Online game revenues increased 30.6% year over year to $101.5 million, surpassing management's expectation of $95.0 million to $97.0 million. The increases were mainly due to the continued popularity of Tian Long Ba Bu (TLBB) in China during the quarter.
