According to the Blue Paper of China Medical Devices Industry Development, the most competitive medical offering is state-owned medical devices rather than the medicine. However, the overall medical devices technology of China is lagging behind international average standards for 15 years.
By 2012, there were little less than 2 million medical devices manufacturers in China, but 90% of which were small and medium sized enterprises who had yearly revenue less than RMB 20 million. The whole industry has characteristics of low concentration, low-scale scattered, small sized and vicious rivalry. And some of the core skills are owned by foreign companies. The majority of domestic companies lack R&D capabilities.
