Motorola plans faster launches

MOTOROLA Inc, which plans to sell its loss-making handset division, will quicken the launch of new cell phone models in China, the world's biggest mobile phone market, the United States-based firm said yesterday.

The possible spin-off of the handset division, which is also fast losing its market share domestically, won't influence the debut of Motorola's new models this year and the company will launch phones which have PDA, handwriting recognition and GPS functions for Chinese consumers, Michael Tong, Motorola China's mobile device business product director, said in Shanghai yesterday.

"The structural change (of Motorola) won't influence the new product design and kick-off and we still have many innovation patents," Tong said.

Motorola will launch seven new phone models within three months, with three of them being PDA phones, according to Motorola China.

The new models will cover from high-end to entry-level, as well as a 3G phone based on the China-developed TD-SCDMA (time division-synchronous code division multiple access) technology.

Globally, Motorola captured a 10.2 percent market share by sales in the first quarter, against 18.4 percent a year ago, and the firm dropped to the No. 3 spot among top phone makers in the world, according to Gartner Inc, a US-based IT research firm.

"Motorola is unlikely to introduce many products (globally) in the second half of 2008, a time when most competitors will bring new models to the market, so it stands little chance of winning back its No. 2 position," said Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner.

''It may even have to watch out for LG, the current No. 4 player," Carolina said.
