BenQ to move 3G handset production to China

   Date:2006/12/31

BenQ, which has been making 3G handsets at its facilities in Europe and Taiwan, will start moving most of its 3G model production to China at the end of 2006, according to YS Cheng, director of the company's communications products for Asia-Pacific.

Cheng pointed out that BenQ's S80 and S81 3G models, which are available in Taiwan, are produced in Taiwan. Its EF81 3G model, which is available in Europe and will hit the market in Taiwan in the fourth quarter, is made in Europe, he added.

But starting the end of this year, BenQ will gradually move its 3G production to China. BenQ has production bases in China's Suzhou and Shanghai, Cheng said. In the past, the Suzhou base catered to the local Chinese market, and the Shanghai base produced handsets for export, Cheng explained. But now no distinctions are made between the two plants.

Cheng said in order to strengthen competitiveness, BenQ will increase production at markets where demand is strong. However, he maintained that the facilities in Europe will not be completely shut down, because they are still needed to meet huge demand in Europe. Cheng said 3G and a metallic looks will be marketing themes for BenQ handsets in the second half of 2006.
