China Mobile To Invest 13B Yuan In Shanghai's Broadband

August 8 -- China Mobile (Rcode:00941:) is rumored to be planning to invest over 13 billion yuan to extend its broadband network in Shanghai, reports 163.com, citing an unnamed source. China Mobile said it will set up 90,000 wireless LAN access points in public places across the city, and raise the bandwidth for overseas online traffic to 300 gigabytes by the end of 2013.

According to other media reports, China Mobile and the Shanghai municipal government signed an agreement regarding the extension of international communication in Shanghai. China Mobile intends to let Shanghai become China’s communication center in Asia Pacific areas. In addition, China Mobile will integrate the GSM, TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE and WLAN networks to a build wireless broadband network in the wealthy coastal city.

An unnamed source said China Mobile will invest several hundred million yuan to build an TD-LTE experimental network covering Lujiazui, People’s Square and Xujiahui district in Shanghai this year.

China Mobile plans to raise the GSM and TD-CDMA coverage rates to 90 percent in Shanghai by the end of 2013.
