Plotech eyes China white-brand handset PCB business

   Date:2007/01/22

Plotech anticipates its high-density interconnect (HDI) boards to account for about 30% of its annual sales in 2007 after dedicating more efforts to its white-brand handset business in China, according to the company.

Plotech said it has been in the China handset printed circuit board (PCB) market for a long time and the company anticipates the contribution to revenues from HDI boards will grow from almost 20% in the third quarter of 2006 to 30% in 2007. The company has partnered with design houses MediaTek and Spreadtrum Communication on new handset solutions development.

Plotech said its second plant in Kunshan, China will start production in the second quarter of 2007 with an initial monthly capacity of 100,000 square feet and contribute about NT$150 million to the company's revenues. The PCB maker plans for a total monthly capacity of 300,000 square feet for HDI board production at the site.

Plotech said the handset market in China is distinct from other markets in terms of how component suppliers develop their solutions. Handset makers usually source for chips from chip suppliers and produce their own solutions for channel customers. These channel customers then source for required PCBs from PCB makers directly.
