China-based Huawei Technologies and ZTE made headway in the international telecom market last year, with Huawei securing 26 contracts for the establishment of WCDMA/HSPA networks and ZTE accounting for 40% new global orders for CDMA networks.

With the 26 contracts received last year, Huawei has won a total of 47 WCDMA/HSPA contracts, said Paul Pai, president for sales, Huawei Taiwan.

In 2006, Huawei helped Vodafone establish its HSPA networks in Spain and also built the HSDPA network of Japan-based eMobile, noted Pai, who indicated that Huawei will build an IP-based HSDPA network in Japan this year.

In addition to WCDMA, Huawei also took up a 65% share of the global CDMA450 market and more than a 30% share of the NGN (Next Generation Network) and IP DSLAM market, according to the company.

Huawei also generated revenues of US$76 million in Taiwan last year, helping local carriers and service providers build GSM, CDMA and WCDMA base stations and selling 3G data cards, 3G handsets, soft switches, routers and optical-fiber network devices, Pai stated.

In the CDMA segment, ZTE claimed that it built the world's first full IP-based CDMA 2000 network and also pioneered the establishment of a commercialized EV-DO Rev. A network, according to Xie Daxiong, executive vice president of ZTE. Xie stated that ZTE has built more than 50 EV-DO networks in over 40 countries.
