High Tech Computer (HTC) will make two CDMA smartphones for UTStarcom, which will then launch the 3G phones in cooperation with Verizon Wireless, according to market sources.

UTStarcom will offer the two phones under the model names SMT 5800 (HTC codename Libra) and XV 6800 (Mogul). Both models are built with Qualcomm's MSM 7500 chipset and support CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO, the sources indicated.

The SMT 5800 and XV 6800 are among a number of new smartphones set to be launched by Verizon in the second half of this year. The new phones will also include the Q9m and Q9c from Motorola, the i760 from Samsung Electronics, the Treo 755P from Palm and the Blackberry 8130 from RIM (Research in Motion), the sources added.

The Q9m is expected to be available starting this month, while the Q9c is to be launched in the fourth quarter. The i760 will come in September, followed by the SMT 5800 and XV 6800 in October, and the Treo 755P in November, the sources indicated.

Shipments of Samsung's and HTC's new smartphones built with Qualcomm chipsets will not be subject to a recent US ITC (International Trade Commission) ruling disallowing any further imports of CDMA phones based on the 3G chipset from Qualcomm since Verizon has signed a license agreement with Broadcom covering the sale of EV-DO models, the sources noted.
