Ericsson is actively expanding its IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) business to promote the quadruple play (Internet access, telephony, video and wireless) service, according to Stefan Johansson, president of Ericsson Taiwan.

With effort, Ericsson has secured a total of 39 commercial contracts for the establishment of IMS frameworks for a number of telecom services providers, including Telefonica, Sprint Nextel, Vodafone, Softbank Mobile and China Network Communications, among others, Johansson indicated.

Ericsson's recent acquisitions, including Tandberg Television, Mobeon, Drutt and LHS, have allowed the company to strengthen its deployment in the fields of IMS and IPTV, Johansson stated.

In addition to IMS contracts, Ericsson has also signed 180 contracts for the implementation, test, system integration, supply of equipment and related services for IPTV service, added Johansson.

The number of broadband subscribers worldwide is likely to expand to as many as 1.5 billion by 2011 from the current 250 million, indicating the potential growth for IMS business, Johansson noted.
