During the next five years, it is estimated that the Chinese mainland will need to spend over 300 billion yuan ($47 billion) per year to maintain its road infrastructure, Li Shenglin, Minister of Transport, said over the weekend.
In 2010, around 200 billion yuan was spent on maintaining the road network on the mainland, falling below that needed.
All the levels of the governments need to raise financing to maintain the road network, Li said.
Around 110 million passengers and 85 million tons of goods are transported by road daily.
