China will continue to ban milk powder made in Japan amid scandals that radioactive cesium was found in milk powder made by the Japanese Meiji Holdings Co., said the country's quality regulator.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) stopped importing of milk powder from Japan after the Fukushima nuclear plant was wrecked by an earthquake and tsunami this April.

Traces of cesium-137 and cesium- 134 were found in batches of “Meiji Step” products made in March, indicating lingering radiation threat to food.

Meiji made it clear on Dec 7th that the affected milk powder did not go to Chinese market and all products in the market were manufactured in Australia.

Taobao, China's biggest retail website said all Meiji-branded products had been off-the-shelf.

Meiji decided to call back 400,000 units of affected milk powder and offer safe new products for free.
