Panel makers seeking to return to profits through new products and markets

   Date:2012-02-14

In view of increasing additional production capacities of TFT-LCD panels from China-based makers and no substantial increase in global demand for panels, Taiwan-based panel makers should develop products for new applications, of new specifications and high added value as well as tap emerging markets to seek profitable operation in 2012, according to those makers.

China-based BOE Technology and Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology have started operation of 8.5G production lines, with total production capacity to be increased in the second quarter of 2012, the sources indicated.

To avoid price competition with the two newcomers, Taiwan-based fellow makers should develop panels for new applications such as smart TVs and Ultrabook PCs and of new specifications such as 39- and 50-inches and higher resolution levels as well as high added value including AMOLED, 3D and touch, the sources pointed out. In addition, Taiwan-based makers should tap emerging markets including Latin America, Southeast Asia, East Europe and the Middle East, the sources indicated.

According to forecast by Digitimes Research, Taiwan-based makers will ship 61.0 million TFT-LCD panels of over 9 inches in the first quarter of 2012, falling by 5.6% on quarter and by 6.3% on year.
