Gasgoo.com (Shanghai February 18) - Volkswagen's brand new second generation Sharan minivan will make its Chinese market debut on February 27, xcar.com.cn reported today. According to the official statement, the Sharan will be available as an imported model and will come in three variations priced between 312,800 and 412,800 yuan ($49,686-$65,571).
The last generation Sharan was introduced in February 1995 and has been on the market for 15 years now. Several in the industry have been anxiously awaiting the update. The new Sharan (pictured) shares styling similarities with modern VWs, with a more aggressive grille design and larger headlights.
The new Sharan measures 4.85 m long, 1.9 m wide and 1.72 m high, with a wheelbase of 2.92 m. The overall measurements are slightly larger than the previous generation. The Sharan offers plenty of interior space, with room for seven people to sit comfortably.
VW offers several engine choices, including diesel and gasoline powered TDI/TSI 2.0 L engines, as well as a 1.4 L TSI gasoline engine. The 2.0 L engines can produce up to 200 hp, while the 1.4 L choice has a maximum power output of 150 hp. A six-speed DSG transmission is standard.
It remains to be seen how the Sharan will fair against rival models such as the Buick GL8 and Honda Odyssey. Furthermore, the minivan market in China has been very unwelcoming as of late. The high price tag that comes with this being an imported model may also be off putting to buyers, so it is very possible that VW will announce domestic production.
