DSLR camera lenses become major shipment force for Kinko Optical

   Date:2012-03-15

With camera brand vendors including Canon, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony aggressively pushing into the DSLR camera and mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) industries, upstream optical lenses maker Kinko Optical is seeing its optical lens shipments for DSLR camera enjoy growth.

Kinko is currently supplying optical glass lenses for Canon's G and S series MILCs with Canon's orders already accounting for 40% of Kinko's combined revenues from the first two months of 2012. As Canon is expanding its overseas production bases including those in Taiwan, Kinko has also been aggressively expanding its plants and equipment, and expects DSLR camera lenses to account for more than 50% of its revenues in the near future.

Kinko in 2012, invested NT$500 million (US$16.91 million) to expand its capacity and is expected to increase its current volume from 3-3.3 million units to five million by July or August.

In addition to optical glass lenses, Kinko has also entered the plastic lens market and is striving for orders from notebook and tablet PC vendors. Although the company already has some projects underway, they are yet to contribute profits for the company, while some large shipments to PC vendors scheduled for the second half.
