Indonesian consumer spending on electronics up 22% in first 8 months

JAKARTA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sales of electronic goods rose 22 percent in the first eight months of this year on the back of strong consumer spending, local media reported on Saturday.

Sales from January to August were up 22 percent to 16.1 trillion rupiah (about 1.8 billion U.S. dollars) from the same period last year, Iffan Suryanto, a member of Electronic Marketer Club, an association of electronics makers and distributors, said on Friday.

He added that the full-year figures could be a 28 percent increase to 25 trillion rupiah. LCD/LED and plasma TVs led sales, followed by air-conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines, said Iffan.

On a monthly basis, sales in August were down 8.7 percent to 2.1 trillion rupiah from July, as many consumers refrained from spending on durable goods during Ramadan.

Iffan said the Indonesian economy's fundamentals remained good and "demand for electronic goods keeps increasing in line with stronger consumer purchasing power."

As Indonesia's growing economy fuels a rise in middle-income households, consumer goods continue to post healthy sales, the Jakarta Globe reported..

Economists and government officials expect a doubling in the size of the country's middle class over the next few years to almost 50 million. Household income is now inching over 3,000 U.S. dollars annually in a nation of about 240 million people, and is expected to surpass 4,000 U.S. dollars in the next three years.

Regarding the rupiah's volatility, Iffan said electronics producers were not too worried in light of Indonesia's resilient economy.
