Following the pilot duty-free program in Hainan Province designed to boost high-end consumption, which began in April, local duty-free shops have received an average 10,419 customers per day, and had sold 573,362 items as of last Thursday, according to provincial government.

Sales of duty-free products accounted for 48.95 percent of overall consumption by non-locals over the period. Of all the duty-free transactions, 99.5 percent were valued at less than 5,000 yuan ($783.29).
