China market: Asustek, Gigabyte together may share 60% of motherboard sales in 2012

Taiwan-based vendor Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology aim to ship 10.0 million and 8.0 million motherboards, respectively, in the China market, together accounting for 60% of a projected 30.0 million motherboards to be sold there in 2012, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Asustek and Gigabyte shipped 8.0 million and 6.5 million motherboards respectively in the China market in 2011, together sharing 50% of an estimated sales volume of 29.0 million units, the sources indicated. The remaining 50% was shared by Taiwan-based Micro-Star International, Elitegroup Computer Systems, Biostar Microtech International and ASRock as well as several China-based vendors including Onda Electronics and Colorful Technology and Development, the sources pointed out.

Asustek and Gigabyte have lowered prices by over 10% to promote sales of their entry- and mid-level motherboards in the China market, bringing pressure of price cut on competitors, the sources indicated.
