Chinese Internet companies Sina and Tencent today shut down commenting services on their microblogging sites for three days, a move that follows a government crackdown on websites due to spreading rumors and illegal information.
A spokesman for the Office of National Internet Information disclosed that 16 Internet sites who involved with spreading rumors had been prosecuted, Sina and Tencent with illegal commenting on microblogging were asked to take corrective measures to further strengthen the management. Today the two companies issued a notice for rectification.
The rumors are about "military vehicles into Beijing", "a accident in Beijing", C114 learns.
