Ru Jigang, general manager of Beijing-based bi-directional network reconstruction solution provider Topvision Technologies, a subsidiary of Beijing-based digital video and IPTV system provider Sumavision (300079.SZ), recently announced that a draft for comment for the broadcast television network bi-directional conversion technology standard C-DOCSIS (China-DOCSIS) has passed; the standard will thus likely become the first industry standard for Next-Generation Broadcasting (NGB) access. The release of the standard is expected to put an end to the hurdles to interoperability among products and incompatibility between broadcast terminals, problems that have arisen from a lack of one uniform standard during bi-directional network conversion.

C-DOCSIS increases bidirectional network speeds to 1 Gbps, and can achieve between 50-100 Mbps to the home, making it comparable to the speed of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH). The advantage of C-DOCSIS is that it requires no rewiring and incurs a much lower cost than FTTH.
