China Unicom To Accelerate Launch Of WoPhone Tablets

   Date:2011/08/01

July 28 --- China Unicom (600050, 0762.HK) plans to accelerate the launch of tablets and Internet TVs which run on the WoPhone operating system through enhanced cooperation with chip makers and solution providers, reports CCTIME.com, citing Zhang Zhijiang, head of China Unicom's technology department.

According to Yu Ying Tao, general manager of China Unicom's sales department, although high-end chips are more stable and of higher quality, the main issue was that such chips cost more.

Chips made by Qualcomm are priced at about $10 higher than other chips, and though this will not affect high-end mobile phones, it will have a negative impact on medium and low-end mobile phones, said Yu.

China Unicom will cooperate with MediaTek, a leading global chip design company, in order to control its spending on chips, added Yu.
