HannStar Display in September increased its LCD panel shipments to the large-size segment that had been relegated to the margins of its business roadmap due to lower-than-expected demand from the non-Apple tablet camp for small- to medium-size LCD and touch applications, according to industry sources.
Hannstar's shipments of small- to medium-size LCD panels reached 40.66 million units in September 2011, declining 3.5% on month. But its shipments of large-size panels and own-brand HannG products totaled 360,000 units, with an on-month gain of 37.1% from August.
The sources said the weak demand for its small- to medium-size applications prompted HannStar to recalibrate some of its capacity for notebook panels.
The company's consolidated revenues totaled NT$3.56 billion (US$118 million) in September, growing 10.6% on month, boosted by the increases in large-size panel shipments.
But HannStar at present still has its major focus on the small- to medium-size segment. It is also gearing up development of touch panels.
The industry sources pointed out that small- to medium-size touch panel suppliers have showed mixed results in second-half 2011 so far. Sales of makers in the Apple camp have continued to grow, while those of non-Apple suppliers have been unstable, said sources.
HannStar has obtained a carbon footprint certificate and two water footprint verifications since December 2010 for its LCD panels and touch panels.
