Global shipments of LCD TVs are expected to top 226 million units in 2012, growing 10% from those projected for 2011, according to data compiled by end-market operators. But flat panel players are conservative about the prospects citing the unsteady global economy.

Global LCD TV shipments will be only around 200 million units in 2011, 50 million units lower than previous predicted by TV brands.

China has become the largest LCD TV market in the world, according to industry sources. Its local brands have been eager to gain bigger share of the pie. China-based TV brands such as Hisense, TCL, Gensys, Haier and Changhong all expect sales of LCD TVs to grow in 2012.

Japan-based firms have been affected by the appreciation of the Japanese yen and declining production. Sony has forecast flat TV sales in 2012 while Sharp has lowered its 2012 LCD TV shipment target to 12 million units. But in general, TV vendors are quite optimistic about next year.

According to industry sources, TV brands have diverse products for different market segments, such as high-end items with 3D functionality, LED backlights and Internet connectivity for developed markets. There are also designs such as ultra-thin and narrow bezels to attract consumers.

For emerging markets, TV brands hope to attract consumers with low-price LED TVs.
