AMD, on November 14, announced its latest 16-core Opteron 6200 series server processors, previously codenamed Interlagos, in Beijing, China with server players such as Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell, Acer, Asustek Computer and Supermicro, will all launch related systems and motherboard products.
AMD also revealed its Opteron 4200 series (Valencia) processors along with the Opteron 6200 with company corporate vice president and general manager, Commercial Business Paul Struhsake pointed out that the new CPUs will only consume half the power per core, requiring two third less floor space and up to two third lower platform price.
Furthermore, AMD also announced it will expand its product lineups for 2012 with a new Opteron 3000 service platform to be revealed in the first quarter, targeting high-density and ultra-low-power consumption 1-way web hosting, web serving and microserver markets. The platform will feature quad- to eight-core CPUs codenamed Zurich that will launch in the first half of 2012. Zurich features Bulldozer structure and supports AM3+ sockets.
Prior to the announcement, AMD has received a cooperation project worth of 50 billion yuan (US$7.87 billion) from the Beijing government, which will also supply 40% of the 100,000 server CPUs orders from Chengdu government's cloud computing center project and with more city governments in China currently seeking cooperation with AMD, it is expected to greatly enhance the company's revenue performance in the future.
