GAC FCA launches new alternative energy vehicles; Wrangler HEV is expected to enter the Chinese market

   Date:2016/02/18
Facing the stricter global emission standards, Jeep, covering many large-displacement models, is starting its emission reduction measures. FCA group issued the new generation plan for dynamic systems recently, in which the new Jeep Wrangler will launch a HEV model. China, one of FCA’s main markets, will also open an alternative energy era. Ms. Zheng Jie, President of GAC FCA reveals that, “Every automobile company will take alternative energy vehicles into consideration, including us.”The future Wrangler HEV is expected to be launched in China.

The fourth phrase of limit standards for fuel consumption is applied from 1st, January, 2016. Average fuel consumption of passenger vehicles (including alternative energy vehicles) produced by domestic companies is reduced to 6.7L per hundred kilometers. China’s average fuel consumption for passenger vehicles will be reduced to 5L per hundred kilometers by 2020. It’s a great challenge for every main automobile company. FCA will promote electrification of its automobile products and deduce fuel consumption by launching HEV models to face the stricter standards. Zheng Jie reveals that, alternative energy vehicles will also be taken into GAC FAC’s future product plan.

All models except from Renegade in Jeep, FCA’s SUV brand, have been equipped with engines of displacement no smaller than 2.0L. According to its plan, the new-generation Jeep Wrangler will firstly launch a light-HEV model, and then a PHEV model. FCA’s CEO SergioMarchionne once said that, GrandCherokee HEV model is planned to be launched with the same system of Wrangler. The launching of alternative energy vehicles will effectively lower the average fuel consumption of all models under Jeep.

As the largest market, China’s production and sales volume of alternative energy vehicles are 340,471 and 331,092 units, increasing 3.3 and 3.4 times respectively. Apart from domestic brands, luxury brands are also taking efforts in this area. The future Jeep Wrangler HEV model will compete with Volvo XC90 HEV model and Volkswagen Touareg, which were launched last year. Besides, Cherokee and Patriot may also launch alternative energy vehicles in the future with the deepening of FCA’s electrification strategy.

Apart from the launching of alternative energy vehicles, Jeep will also popularize small-displacement turbo-charged engines. The domestic Patriot, which will be launched in the first half of this year, will be equipped with a 1.4T turbo-charged engine. Zheng Jie reveals that, the new Compass will enjoy the halving tax policy for small displacement vehicles, which means it may also be equipped with the engine. Currently, Fiat develops a 2.0 turbo-charged engine and uses it to its brands. According toChrysler and Fiat‘s cooperative project on small-displacement engines, many models under Jeep may be equipped with the 2.0 turbo-charged engines.
