Mercedes-Benz sales jump 21% on small cars, crossovers

   Date:2016/07/08
Mercedes-Benz's China sales jumped more than 21 percent year on year to 39,462 vehicles in June as the company enjoyed strong demand for the long-wheelbase C-class sedan.

Mercedes also reported brisk sales of the A- and B-class small cars, the CLA, CLA Shooting Brake and the GLA small crossover.

For the first six months, Mercedes-Benz deliveries totaled 219,999 vehicles, an increase of 33 percent from the same period a year earlier.

China is Mercedes' largest market -- ahead of the United States and Germany -- and the brand is now neck and neck with BMW for bragging rights as China's second-largest luxury brand.

Audi AG is China's top-selling luxury marque by a significant margin. Audi and BMW have not released June sales in China.

Mercedes is expanding production capacity in China to maintain growth. Last month, Beijing Benz Automotive Co. announced plans to spend 4 billion yuan ($607 million) to expand its engine plant in Beijing.

The factory produces four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines for cars and commercial vans built in China. Last year, the plant produced 250,000 engines.

Beijing Benz is a joint venture between Daimler AG and BAIC Motor Co.
